Dosage, Administration, and Bioavailability
Gabapentin is unique because its absorption by the body is "saturable." This means that after a certain dose, the body stops absorbing it effectively.
Standard Dosing: Adult doses typically range from 900 mg to 1,800 mg per day, divided into three doses. Some patients may take up to 3,600 mg daily under strict supervision.
The 12-Hour Rule: Because the drug leaves the system relatively quickly, the time between any two doses should not exceed 12 hours to maintain a constant level in the blood.
Bioavailability: At lower doses (300 mg), about 60% is absorbed. At very high doses (1,200 mg), absorption drops to about 35%. This is why doctors prefer frequent, smaller doses rather than one giant dose.
Food Interaction: Unlike many drugs, Gabapentin absorption is not significantly affected by food, meaning it can be taken on an empty or full stomach.
