CHALLENGES
The spiritual journey of Venerable Minh Tue and the monastic group following the Dhutaṅga path is one filled with hardships and challenges, both physically, mentally, and socially. Throughout this process, the monks face numerous difficulties, including harsh living conditions, continuous public scrutiny, false rumors, legal obstacles, and changes within the volunteer team.
Challenges on the Dhutanga Path
1. 1. Harsh Climate, Difficult Walking Journey
• Every day, the monastic community walks dozens of kilometers under the scorching sun or in cold rain.
• Their feet are often blistered and sore, but they must continue to move forward.
• The rainy season makes the roads slippery, with a high risk of floods or landslides.
• The cold season makes resting outdoors even more difficult, especially when lacking proper blankets or warm clothing.
2. No Stable Place to Stay
• They do not stay in fixed temples, have no resting rooms, and often sleep outdoors, by the roadside, under trees, or in makeshift shelters.
• Some places are hesitant and unwilling to accommodate them because they do not fully understand the Dhutanga practice.
3. Scarcity of Food and Drinking Water
• They eat only one meal a day from alms, with no food saved for later, so sometimes they lack sufficient nutrition.
• When passing through sparsely populated areas, there are not always people offering alms.
• The water source is not always sanitary, which can lead to illness, but they cannot be choosy.
4. No Use of Money or Transportation
• They do not accept money, do not travel by vehicle, and do not own personal belongings, making the journey even more difficult.
• In case of emergencies like illness or accidents, they have almost no way to handle the situation without the help of volunteers.
1. Being Monitored 24/7
• Locals, YouTubers, and curious onlookers observe every action of the monks, even during meals, sleep, rest, and bathroom breaks.
• Every action can be filmed, edited, and shared online from various perspectives.
2. False Rumors and Media Attacks
• Some false rumors have led the public to misunderstand the monks, such as:
• "The monks use phones and engage in social media."
• "The monks drink coffee, accept money, and own personal property."
• "Venerable Minh Tuệ had a wife and children before becoming a monk."
• And thousands of other fake news stories. These rumors spread rapidly on social media, causing confusion and doubt among many people.
3. Stigma and Misunderstanding from the Community
• Some people, unfamiliar with the image of monks walking barefoot and wearing patched robes, are hesitant or judgmental.
• Even those who once supported the monks may become doubtful upon hearing false rumors.
1. Issues with Monastic Documentation
• Venerable Minh Tue and the monks are not part of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, so some places do not recognize their monastic status.
• Some local authorities do not fully understand the Dhutanga practice, causing difficulties in travel or accommodation.
2. Limitations in Border Crossing
• Walking through different countries encounters numerous obstacles related to paperwork and visas.
• Some countries have strict regulations regarding foreign monks, creating challenges for the journey.
1. Changes and Instability in the Volunteer Team
• Public pressure causes volunteers to quit: Some people start with enthusiasm, but after being criticized or attacked online, they become discouraged and leave.
• Not everyone fully understands the journey: Some volunteers join without a clear understanding of the Dhutanga path, making it difficult for them to stay committed long-term.
• Frequent changes disrupt continuity: When volunteers change too quickly, the monks have to get accustomed to new people, causing difficulties in coordination and support.
2. Donors Also Face Pressure
• Some people want to make offerings but are hesitant due to the fear of being scrutinized or criticized by public opinion.
• Some who initially supported the cause change their minds after hearing false rumors.
1. Natural disasters, epidemics, and social unrest can greatly impact the spiritual journey.
2. The pressure of fame: When becoming an internet phenomenon, maintaining one's true mind and not getting caught up in gossip is a challenge.
3. Bad actors exploit the monk's reputation for personal gain, impersonating him to solicit donations.
4. Reactions from different countries, as each place has different laws and perceptions regarding wandering monks.
The walking journey of Venerable Minh Tue and the monastic community has attracted great attention from the public, especially Buddhists, lay practitioners, and even the curious. However, along with the fame came a series of false rumors, distortions of the truth, causing misunderstandings and damaging the reputation of the monks.
What is noteworthy is that the monks strictly adhere to the precepts, and are under the constant surveillance of locals, YouTubers, and the online community 24/7. Despite this, fake news still appears in various forms. Below are some common fake news that the community should be cautious of:
1. "Venerable Minh Tuệ and the monks drink coffee twice a day"
=> The Truth: The monks practice the Dhutanga path, accepting only the food offered by laypeople according to the alms-round procedure. They do not casually choose food or request beverages. Coffee is not a necessary food for their practice, so the claim of drinking coffee twice a day is fabricated.
2. "The monks use phones and engage in social media"
=> The Truth: The monks do not use personal phones or access social media. They do not take selfies, record videos, or communicate via phone. The content posted on social media is done by others to update the community on their journey.
3. "The group has its own fund and accepts monetary donations"
=> The Truth: The monks do not keep money, nor do they accept monetary offerings or any financial transactions. All expenses related to the journey are supported by volunteers.
4. "The monks walk only part of the way and then get in a vehicle"
=> The Truth: The monks’ journey is continuously recorded by locals, YouTubers, and the people who accompany them.
5. "The monastic community is affiliated with any political/religious organization"
=> The Truth: The monks' journey is a practice according to the Buddha’s teachings, unrelated to any political or religious organization or individuals.
6. "Venerable Minh Tuệ is not an official monk"
=> The Truth: Venerable Minh Tuệ does not belong to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, but he practices according to the True Dharma, following the strict Dhutanga ascetic path. Many enlightened monks during the Buddha’s time did not belong to any religious organization but were still considered true practitioners.
7. "Venerable Minh Tuệ and the monastic community are criticized by international media"
=> The Truth: There has been no credible report from international media criticizing Venerable Minh Tuệ and the monastic community. If such information arises, the community should verify the source rather than trust unverified articles.
8. "There is evidence of misconduct by the monks"
=> The Truth: To date, there is no verifiable evidence of the group violating any precepts. The negative information circulating is mostly edited, speculated, or distorted from a biased perspective.
Additionally, there are many other malicious rumors!
The truth about Venerable Minh Tue's journey and the group has been confirmed by hundreds of thousands of witnesses, including volunteers, local residents, devotees, and YouTube channels accompanying them. However, false rumors continue to appear for various purposes, which could stem from misunderstandings, intentional defamation, exploitation, leading public opinion astray, or even from those who dislike the monks' image of purity."
The spiritual journey of Venerable Minh Tuệ and the monastic community is a path filled with challenges, requiring determination, compassion, and fearlessness. The difficulties mentioned above may not encompass all the challenges the monks will face, as many things are unpredictable.
Nevertheless, with a steadfast resolve, the support from the community, and faith in the path to enlightenment, Venerable Minh Tuệ and the monastic community continue to walk, spreading the light of the Buddha's teachings wherever they go.
