The phenomenon of “Devas appearing” – from a spiritual perspective

A deeply intertwined realm between spirituality, belief, and science.

1/ The phenomenon of “Devas appearing” – from a spiritual perspective

In Theravāda Buddhism, Devas are beings that dwell in realms higher than the human world (such as celestial realms), possessing more subtle energies and not being limited by material constraints like humans. Their “appearance” is not necessarily in physical form but may manifest as unexpected blessings, timely rescues, or mysterious arrangements that defy explanation.

During Thầy Minh Tuệ’s pilgrimages, seemingly hopeless situations have often been miraculously resolved – leading many to believe that Devas are offering protection, a result of the monks’ virtuous conduct, moral discipline, and sincere spiritual aspirations.

2/ Science has not fully explained – and may never fully explain

Modern science primarily investigates the measurable material world. Concepts like “spiritual energy,” “deep intuition,” or “mystical synchronicity” – though frequently observed in real life – still cannot be verified through traditional scientific methods.

Some modern scientific branches suggest:

  • Quantum physics: beginning to imply that consciousness may influence matter.

  • Depth psychology (Carl Jung): acknowledges the existence of the collective unconscious and the idea of synchronicity – meaningful coincidences, a kind of “language” the universe speaks to those with a still mind.

3/ Superpowers from a pure mind?

Some monastics, especially those practicing the austere path like Thầy Minh Tuệ, may develop profound qualities:

  • Strong intuition (an inner knowing of what is to come).

  • Boundless compassion, which moves others to offer help without knowing why.

  • Peaceful energy, capable of calming others simply through presence.

Walking in Sri Lanka

Many scientists and spiritual scholars believe that the human mind can influence reality – and that those who live with moral purity and sincerity may interact with the “subtle waves” of the universe that ordinary people cannot perceive.

There are things that modern science has yet to explain – but which are experienced and realized by those who live a deeply spiritual life. Perhaps this is the “spiritual super-energy” – accessible only to those who live in harmony with nature, with the Dharma, and with a sincere heart.

Respectfully,

Than Thanh Vu
